Pearl Generation Uganda appreciates the value of monitoring and evaluation with regards to the projects/ventures undertaken and it is to this effect that organization has come up with the above mentioned initiatives. It has been noted with concern that in order to cater for the needs of the youth, despite the organization being youth-led, there is a need for an organized platform where the youth whose needs are to be addresses can air out their views so that the initiatives are tailor made to suit them.

In line with the SHAP initiative, the organization has come up with two separate but rather related programmes these two are meant to aid the team in following up the results that are got from the University Health Tour/Caravan that have been held in different institutions of higher learning.

For the University Youth Public Dialogues, once the team has concluded a series of Tours in a particular institution of learning, a platform for discussions is to be set up. The team then engages with the youth who so happen to be the target population, on this set platform in order to find out their views on several things. The matters to be discussed on the platform include but are not limited to

The on-going University Health Caravan

Under this topic, the target population with be tasked to have an exhaustive discussion with the service delivery team to determine the efficacy and plausibility of the health caravan. Questions the service providers intend to answer through this dialogue include is the service reaching the people it was intended for? Do the people meant to receive the services know about it? Is the service easily available?

Adjustments in service delivery

The target population will also be tasked to give suggestions on how to deliver the services in a more effective way so that the team can achieve its target population within the shortest possible time frame.

It is also during this dialogue that the service providers get to know which particular services the youth in question need but aren’t catered for in the caravan so that the necessary adjustments can be made.

The University Youth Public Dialogue is therefore meant to act as one of the assessment tools for the University Health Caravan. It is designed in order to give target population a say in the services they are offered during the caravans.

Pearl generation Uganda (PG-UG) is a youth led organization that is geared at supporting and creating a generation that can be able to deal with their own problems. The directors therefore emphasize the importance of peer education and is with this in mind that the idea of a youth mentorship program was born. This mentorship program hereafter referred to as the #Chatroom fellowship is meant to train peer educators in the various spheres of life with emphasis on health social-economic development and Leadership skills.

This program seeks to take advantage of the above mentioned dialogue in such a way that the topics of focus during this mentorship program will be determined entirely by the discussions held in the communities.

Working mechanism

Youth who seek mentorship or intend to take part in this program will be given a certain period to apply to be part of the program. Once the deadline for application reaches, the team will then discuss the criteria for selection of the most viable candidates basing on the focus topics and several other conditions.

Once the most viable candidates have been selected, the discussions are then take to the platform where both participants and non-participants for that particular edition of the chatroom fellowship are given space to discuss various topics affecting them in the different spheres of their lives. It is from these topics that the focus topics to be covered during the mentorship will be chosen.   On selection of the focus topics the team will then determine how to go about that edition of the fellowship. A period of at least a month should elapse between selection of the topic and commencement of the fellowship. This is to enable the team plan exhaustively for the fellowship.

Each fellowship help is meant to last between 4 days and/or a week depending on the various factors for instance, the topics chosen, the trainers available and also the resources in question.

During these fellowships, the youth are to be mentored both by influential youth in various spheres and also by seasoned experts in different fields. This is to give them a wider point of view instead of limiting their perspective by giving them only one of the two.

The youth are trained on various topics with emphasis on the following

Leadership and Empowerment

Entrepreneurship and Business skills

Social and Livelihood

Under entrepreneurship and Business skill, the youth are taught several skills to enable them start up and keep their businesses afloat in these challenging economic times. The skills include; business planning, start up, management, book keeping and account management among others. These are to help the youth become economically empowered and also enable them teach other how to properly run a functional business.

The aspect of leadership is vital because the training is a mentorship program and each person who goes through the fellowship is thereafter expected to mentor others in the skills they have acquired during the fellowship. It is thereafter crucial to equip the youth with leadership skills so as to enable them properly pass on information after the fellowship.

With this fellowship in place, the organization intends to achieve a platform where youth from different walks of life get to meet and interact without in limitation and learn not only from the panel of experts that have been chosen but also from each other. In this way, each individual that undergoes the mentorship leaves with something new that he/she has not only learnt but can also ably impart the knowledge into others.
